Orthodontics FAQs | Orthodontist in Mount Prospect

What orthodontic treatments do you offer?

We help with overbites, underbites, crowded teeth, crooked teeth, and spaces between teeth. We use metal braces, braces placed behind your teeth, clear braces, and clear aligners, depending on what you need and what you prefer for looks.

Who is a candidate for orthodontic treatment?

Children age 7 and older, teens, and adults with issues such as crowding, misalignment, or bite problems should seek orthodontic care. Orthodontics can also relieve jaw pain when it is caused by misalignment that affects the jaw joint.

How long does orthodontic treatment usually take?

Treatment lasts 6-30 months, depending on age, severity, and chosen method.

Are braces or Invisalign® the best option for me?

If you have mild or medium bite problems and are able to wear clear aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, Invisalign might be right for you. If your teeth need more work, metal braces may be a better option. Braces are also better for kids, teens, or anyone who may forget to wear clear aligners every day.

What happens during my orthodontic consultation?

We begin by taking X-rays and digital  images of your teeth and jawbone to determine your bite alignment, teeth positioning, and what is going below the surface. Our orthodontist will then perform a thorough oral examination, evaluating the alignment of your teeth, how they come together when you bite or close your mouth, and the overall structure and appearance of your smile. This information helps us detect issues of concern, such as spacing, gaps, crossbites, overbites, underbites, crowding, or misalignments that require orthodontic intervention.

If you need treatment, we will explain the problem and go over your options. We’ll tell you what kinds of braces you can use, how long treatment should take, and what will happen. You will have plenty of time to ask questions.

Will I need oral surgery before or during orthodontic treatment?

Most do not need oral surgery. Occasionally, surgery is needed to remove crowded teeth, expose impacted teeth, or correct jaw misalignment.

If you need oral surgery, we will refer you to a qualified oral surgeon with whom we frequently work and who is a trusted colleague. We will coordinate your care to ensure a smooth transition before, during, and after surgery, as well as during your orthodontic treatment.

What foods should I avoid with braces?

  • Hard Foods: Hard candies, nuts, popcorn, pretzels, Doritos, and ice.
  • Sticky/Chewy Foods: Caramel, taffy, gummy bears, Starburst, Skittles, Snickers, and chewing gum.
  • Foods Requiring Biting or Tearing with Your Front Teeth: Apples, raw vegetables, corn on the cob, chicken wings, and ribs.
  • Tough Foods: Beef jerky, tough meats, and hard rolls.

Will I need to wear a retainer after my orthodontic treatment is complete?

Yes. You will need to wear a retainer all day and night for 3 to 6 months to keep your teeth from moving back. After that, we suggest wearing a retainer at night for several years. If you wear your retainer as told, your straight teeth will stay that way for life.
